Martinsville Returns To Friday Qualifying; Other Tracks Expected To Follow

In the first of what is expected to be a series of similar moves in coming weeks, officials at Martinsville Speedway have announced that qualifying for the TUMS Fast Relief 500 will return to its traditional Friday slot this fall.

Time trials for the TUMS Fast Relief 500 will begin at 3:40 p.m. on Friday, October 26, after being held on Saturday afternoon during the last two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race weekends there.

“We’re pleased to be going back to qualifying on Friday,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. “It’s obvious the fans preferred the traditional three day weekend with practice and qualifying on Friday so they should be excited about it as well.” Campbell said the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will continue in its traditional Saturday morning qualifying slot, at 10:35 a.m. Saturday.

Sources say a number of other tracks will revert back to Friday qualifying sessions this season, particularly those that host races in the 2012 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Official announcements are expected in the next few weeks.

This makes me happy. I wasn't a fan of the shortened weekend, and I am not a fan of the shorter races.

I understand that it makes it better for TV, and better for the people that go to most or all of the races, but I think it sucks for those of us that only make one or two races a year.

It costs so much to go to a race and I don't like them talking about shortening it by 20% or more.

IMO, this is one of those areas where attendance @ the track and the TV viewers are in direct conflict.
